Active Schools Volunteer of the Month - January

Our volunteer of the month for January is Sheila Johnston, who is a parent volunteer at Airth Primary School. Active Schools Coordinator Chris Rose said,

"Sheila has coached the school rugby team for the past 3 years and is now running a P1-3 club too. Her commitment, knowledge and love for rugby has given the pupils at Airth a very positive and enjoyable experience. I encourage other parents to be inspired by Sheila and get involved too"

How did you get involved with Active Schools? Through the school, initially helping out with rugby sessions

What do you enjoy most about Volunteering? The kids enjoying themselves

How has being a volunteer with Active Schools benefited you? It has helped me maintain and develop my coaching skills.

Describe your most memorable moment from your time as a volunteer with Active Schools? The excitement from the kids when they realised they had won the cluster schools trophy.

What would you like to be doing in 5 years time? Retired or improving the mental health of young people in and through sport

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about becoming a volunteer? Just do it

If you could try one sport that you've never done before what would it be? Biathlon

If you were left on a desert island and could take with you a luxury item, a book, and a piece of music. What would they be and why?

  • Luxury item - Dark Chocolate – no explanation needed, but obviously as a source of protein, calcium, antioxidants
  • Book - The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir Who Got Trapped in an Ikea Wardrobe by Romain Puertolas – love the humour
  • Music- Best of the Pogues – reminds me of my student days
