Congratulations to Sara Mclay our Active Schools Volunteer of the Month for June. Sara is a current a pupil at Denny High School. Active Schools Coordinator – Keith Bunyan had this to say about Sara:
"Sara is an excellent volunteer and role model for the Active Schools program. Sara is part of Denny High's Sports Ambassadors group who work to increase, improve and promote sporting opportunities within the Denny Cluster. Sara both plays and volunteers in a wide variety of activities including Basketball, Dancing, Athletics, Fitness and Basketball refereeing, she is also a Sports Academy Coach and is continuing to learn and develop her coaching knowledge. Without fantastic volunteers like Sara it would not be possible to run many of the programs we currently deliver through Active Schools, I would just like to say a huge thank you to Sara and all of the other amazing Active Schools volunteers across Denny and keep up the great work!"
Meet our Volunteer of the Month
Name: Sara Mclay
Occupation: School pupil
Favourite sport / activity: Going to the gym.
How long have you been a volunteer with Active Schools? About 4-5 years.
How did you get involved with Active Schools? Through the school.
What do you enjoy most about Volunteering? I enjoyed being able to work with kids and seeing them grow and improve in activities. It was also a good experience because it's not something you get to do every day.
How has being a volunteer with Active Schools benefited you? Through Active Schools I’ve made many memorable memories, it’s helped me get qualifications such as my basketball level 1 coaching qualification and will hopefully help me get into a job in the sports industry.
Describe your most memorable moment from your time as a volunteer with Active Schools? My most memorable moment from my time as a volunteer with active schools was when the children that I taught dance came up to me at the end of the dance show and gave me little gifts which made me feel really appreciated and that my time was worthwhile.
What would you like to be doing in 5 years’ time? In 5 years' time I would like to be inspiring young people to get involved in sport and possibly teaching physical education.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about becoming a volunteer? My biggest advice for anyone thinking about becoming a volunteer is be confident and be yourself because if you aren't then you won't have a memorable experience and neither will the children you’re teaching.
If you could try one sport that you’ve never done before what would it be? If I could try one sport that I've never done before it would be snowboarding.
If you were left on a desert island and could take with you a luxury item, a book, and a piece of music. What would they be and why? Luxury Item: Water so I don’t dehydrate. Book: A manual of how to survive in the desert. Music: I would take party music so I don’t get bored.
