Library PC Use

Below are some common questions about using PCs in libraries. All PC users agree to abide by Falkirk Community Trust's Acceptable Use Policy.

I'm not a library member, can I use a PC?

If you live locally you can register for full membership at any library and you'll be able to use a PC the same day. Please bring a form of ID that features your name and address, such as a driving license or recent bill.

I'm visiting the area, can I use library PCs?

Yes. When you visit the library you will be asked to:

Once you've registered as a visitor you will be given a temporary membership and card which lasts for 14 days. You will be able to use library PCs, or Wi-Fi if you have your own device, for up to 2 hours each day. Wi-Fi data use is limited to 300MB.

Can children use library PCs?

Children under 12 may use the PCs, provided they are accompanied by an adult library member over the age of 16. The adult library member should have read and agreed to the Acceptable Use Policy (PDF, 82KB) and should supervise the child at all times. Children over the age of 12 can sign the Acceptable Use Policy (PDF, 82KB) and use the internet unsupervised.

Can I let someone else use my library card?

No. Please be aware that if you allow someone else to use your membership you will be held responsible if that person breaches the acceptable use policy. You can risk being banned from using Falkirk Libraries PCs in the future.

For how long can I use a PC?

You can initially log on for 1 hour's use, but you can you use a PC for up to 2 hours a day, depending on availability. Please be aware that demand for PCs can be quite high and it is not always possible to extend the length of a session.

You can see how much time you have left by looking at the taskbar or to the top left of the PC desktop.

Does the library restrict some websites?

Libraries employ various system controls to block websites that contravene our Acceptable use Policy eg they are racist or sexually explicit.

If you feel that a website should be blocked, or has been blocked unnecessarily, please see a member of staff.

Can I listen to music or watch videos on the PC?

Yes you can, but we ask that you use headphones so as not to disturb other users. There are a small number of headphones available to borrow at the library counter, but please bring your own if possible.

I need to save my work, what should I do?

Work should not be saved onto library PCs. Please use a removable device, such as a USB drive. 4GB USB memory sticks can be purchased from most libraries for £5.99.

Can I scan documents?

All of our libraries have a scanner and staff are happy to offer general guidance, but will not scan your documents for you.

There is sometimes a demand for scanners so it can be a good idea to book in advance if possible.

Can I print?

You can print from any library PC for a small fee and you must pay for everything that your print. Please note that colour copies cost more than black and white. Please see our list of fees and charges for printing costs.

Will a member of library staff help me to use the PC?

Library staff are happy to give general guidance on the operation of a PC.

Please note that staff cannot enter information for you and they are only able to offer assistance for a limited time.

If you feel you need some extra help with IT, please consider booking a 1-1 session or taking one of our classes.

Libraries regularly run Taster Sessions. Please ask for more information at your local library.

How can I make sure my information is safe?

Falkirk Community Trust uses various system controls to block suspicious websites and unwanted breaches, but there are some things you can do to help keep yourself safe

  • When you are finished with a PC, be sure to log out by clicking "End Session" on the desktop.
  • Use your own external device, like a USB stick to save documents.

A website I want to see is blocked what should I do?

If you cannot access a website as it is blocked, please speak to a member of staff to request it be released for access. Please note websites cannot be unblocked immediately; this is subject to checks via our IT department.

Terms and conditions

  • Access is limited to a maximum of 2 users on each PC at any one time.
  • Use of a library PC is limited to two hours per day for health and safety reasons.
  • Falkirk Community Trust takes no responsibility for credit card security when ordering over the internet.
  • Any breaches of Falkirk Community Trust's Acceptable Use Policy (PDF, 82KB) will result in PC access being withdrawn.
  • All access to the Internet is monitored and recorded by Falkirk Community Trust.
