Growing for Nature

Growing for Nature is a grassroots social project initiated and run by the local community. We aim to produce sustainable food that is grown in a way which enhances and supports the other flora and fauna in Muiravonside Country Park.

This project brings together the local community at Muiravonside Country Park to grow sustainable food and enhance the environment for wildlife within the park. The project has linked the local communities that surround the park and brought them together with the local bee keepers and other park users to set up a sustainable community growing area which contains 34 growing plots, a community orchard that contains 200 heritage fruit trees and two local bee keepers who look after the bee hives on the site that continue to grow their colonies.

The project was created as there was a need identified by the local community, during consultation about the future of the park, for space to grow their own fruit and vegetables. There was a lack of space in the village for this type of activity so we created the growing area within the Country Park with money from the local community and other funders to get the venture of the ground.

The bee keepers are looking to increase the number of hives over the next few years which in turn will help the orchard and community growers produce large yields of sustainable food year on year.

The overall objective of the plots is to be totally self-sustaining, working alongside nature to produce local food for the community and make the park an active hub for social action.

The project has been led by the Muiravonside Community Growing Area and Muiravonside Beekeepers with help from Falkirk Community Trust and Forth Environment Link. It was funded by the Maddiston Community Council, Heritage Lottery Fund, Falkirk Environment Trust, Woodland Trust, Action Earth and the People Postcode Lottery.
